Ashton Bradford: student choosing 1

The other day, I was hiking one of the trails on 64th street in Virginia Beach with my father when we stumbled across this tree. The tree had an open hole from disease, however the hole was filled with all kinds of things. There were carvings of names, there were random items like pennies, old water bottles and a pair of sneakers. There were also various colors on it that came from markers that were also deposited into the gaping hole.  This seemed to be a place where everybody deposited trash and items they don't need, however there was a different vibe to it. The carvings and colors gave us a different look on the situation. Was this just a makeshift trash bin? Does this have any importance?

We decided to sit and wait at a log for people to pass by. One after another, they all looked at the hole, and either continued hiking or placed something in. When the hiker put something in, it was fifty-fifty either trash or something of substance. We decided to ask one of the hikers what was up with the tree. The man was in his 50s and hiked these trails all the time, as his house was only half a mile from the reserve. He has no idea how the tree came about, but it all started a year or 2 ago, and that they come and clean it out. It was just so odd and foreign to me, and the tree wasn't even dead. People deposit trash and stuff straight into it and the tree just accepts this, maybe it's meant to be.
