 Martin Buber: I and Thou

"I" a word frequently used and often overused in today's world. But I have decided it is being misused. As Martin Buber's theory says, you cannot have I without a Thou, and Thou being other, as in: person, animal, just the recognition of others. Contrary to the I and Thou relationship, there is I and it. This relationship is between self and thing, with no recognition of another.

This is precisely why I believe the word "I" is being misused in many instances today. To say I or acknowledge you are an I, you must first and foremost acknowledge Thou, or another person. People live their entire lives regarding what should be Thou, simply as "it." Using people for their own personal gain, as disposable objects, as a means rather than an end.

People today do not use "I" correctly because they do not recognize others but only recognize their own egos. A self-centered society is what we live in. Many do daily life with others that do not regard us as people, but as objects in themselves, as side characters in the life they desire to be living.
