Kayla Hammond - Outdoor Experience (Carters Mountain)
During the month of October I decided to take a trip back to my hometown for the weekend. While I was home I decided to go Apple Picking at Carters Mountain located in Charlottesville, VA. Going to Carters Mountain is one of my favorite things to do in my hometown. I enjoy watching the sunset over the summer, peach picking in August and Apple Picking in October. It is only 20 minutes away from where I live and offers a beautiful view of Charlottesville Virginia.
On the day I scheduled to go apple picking it was very cold and rainy. When we fist arrived the sun decided to come out for about an hour. I grabbed a drink and sat at one of their picnic tables and enjoyed the view. I could see the entire city of Charlottesville the most noteworthy buildings are Thomas Jefferson's house and UVA. It was interesting seeing all the cars backed up on 64 due to rush hour. While I was at peace with this view I imagined someone sitting in their car frustrated with traffic. I snapped a few pics of the view and then walked over to the apple trees to pick apples!
It started raining as soon as I started picking apples. This was disappointing because I hoped by leaving the umbrella in the car it wouldn't rain. Of course that isn't how the weather works and it was forecasted to rain all day. Due to the rain, it had caused the pathway to be a muddy mess. This made walking very slippery and I nearly fell on multiple occasions. Despite this I still really appreciated the opportunity to go apple picking this year. It was interesting applying information learned from class to things so simple like how apples communicate to us. When they are ripe the color is a softer red or green and when they are rotten there are spots of brown color and might be mushy!
