Fight for Together AT Hike

This blog post is going to be about this amazing family who hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018. This is a family of 8, with 6 kids aged from 17 to 2 years old, who decided to hike the AT together. They’re the Crawford Family, but on the trail they were just known as The Family. While doing this they broke a couple records like the largest family group to hike the AT, as well as the youngest female hiker to complete the trail. I’ll like their documentary below if anyone is interested.

I felt like this family’s backpacking trip related to our class because their intention for going was to complete something difficult together, as well as to grow and bond as a family. Throughout their documentary they mention multiple times how the trail changed them, and how much they loved hiking it no matter how hard it was to complete. They grew and learned a lot while on the trail, and experienced a ton of trail magic from kind strangers who had heard about their journey either through their YouTube uploads or through word of mouth. It was really amazing to watch how much support they had.

One of the main moments of growing/changing/bonding that I noticed, and that they mentioned, was when their oldest daughter, Dove, was talking about her hopes and dreams and what she wanted out of her future. The dad, Ben, said he had never heard her talk about life like that before and he was really excited to get this “inside glance” at her thoughts and feelings.

The main point of this post was to talk about how much they grew and changed on this adventure. They are very open about how they struggled at times, especially with having six children with them; but they also talked about how great it was to do something so challenging together. They said it was really weird to be back at home at the end, and that as soon as they were finished they were missing the trail, a trait that I find is common among backpackers.
