Olivia Strittmatter - Outside Reading 2
Blog Post 13 - Outside Readings 2
This blog post is going to be about some research that I’ve been doing about long-distance hiking on the AT.
Since I am going on the AT backpacking study abroad trip I’ve been reading and watching a lot of videos and articles about what supplies are needed for a long distance hike. I’ve also been talking to my friend who goes backpacking every summer, but I don’t think he counts as a reading.
The most important thing that I’ve learned, in my opinion, is about the four most important things you need while backpacking. The first is a good quality backpack that fits you properly and doesn’t hurt at all; you also have to make sure it will fit all of your gear, but to choose to go smaller rather than bigger to reduce weight. The second thing is to get a good quality sleeping bag that can withstand the lowest temperatures that you will encounter, and to get a waterproof bag for it to make sure it stays as dry as possible. The third is to have a good tent, or hammock, to use because shelter is extremely important, especially when it’s storming; and that tents are better than hammocks if you are a cold sleeper (which I am). The fourth very important thing to have is a good water filter and/or purifier; you have to do research ahead of time to find out which would be more suitable for you and the types of water sources that are available to you.
Then there’s all of the other slightly less important aspects like your clothes, which shouldn’t be made of cotton, and also rain gear. Then there are things that you don’t really need, like a stove, because cold-soaking is always an option if you don’t want to carry the weight. Everything you carry though depends on you and what weight you consider necessary and what you would like to have with you.
