Olivia Strittmatter - A Year of Ice and Fire
Blog Post 15 - Outside Reading 3
This blog post is going to be about another documentary by Homemade Wanderlust. I know it’s not technically a reading, but I feel like it applies because I learned so much from it. This one is her documentary of thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, and it’s called Pacific Crest Trail Documentary: A Year of Ice and Fire. I’ll put the link below if anyone wants to check it out!
In the first half an hour or so she mentions how much she loves being out on the trails. She calls it a nature reset after being in the “real world” for so long. Dixie talks a lot about how even the worst days on the trail are still so much better than the best days at work, and I’ve noticed that a lot of thru-hikers mention things like that when they talk about hiking vs. being at work. She calls the micro-ecosystems she finds on plants “hiker television” as well as the larger landscapes. Especially all of the different types of landscapes that she walks through on the PCT, such as snowy mountains, deserts, wildfire areas, and more.
Dixie also talks about the types of people that she meets along the trail. Some of the people that stood out to me were the lady who had been diagnosed with glaucoma and her 10 year old son who were out there hiking and experiencing nature before she goes blind. Another was the 70 year old man whose wife thinks he’s insane for attempting a thru-hike of the PCT. She also mentions the trail angels that set up different types of trail magic and things to help hikers, such as the people who run the free hostel for backpackers in one of the towns.
