Importance of Exploring new places

"The sacredness of a place may be highly ephemeral, subjective, and hard to define. A special experience that one has at a place perceived to be sacred usually proves to be unrepeatable. Going back to the site never guarantees one's being able to return to the experience." (lane 217)

Having a sacred encounter can happen anywhere and it can be a very special experience. Earlier in the book Lane talks about how he has had encounters along familiar trails. But once you have an encounter you never really know what will happen if you go back to the same place.

I have walked my favorite trail dozens of times. I know it very well and honestly there isn't that much that's new to me. When you know a trail like that you can have two experiences either you are very comfortable with it and you can look for new things and experiences. Or you could find that you know the trail well so you enjoy just going down the old familiar trails once again.

Finding a new trail and or at least a new path can lead to a new perspective and another chance at having an encounter.
